Intruders Beware: Our Latest Featured Detective Is a Force to Be Reckoned with

The Dear Holmes “Featured Detective” Program honors one detective per mystery for their clever and well-thought-out solution to the case. To learn how to send in your own solution, visit Dearholmes.com/solve.

Dear Detectives,

Your help in solving the recent case of The Wightham Mote Legacy was indispensable, as always — This case of hidden treasure, forgotten family history, and ominous night-noises, was a tough nut to crack, but our corresponding detectives approached it with dedication and tenacity matched only by that of Holmes himself. After having reviewed all of this case’s submissions, we are now pleased to announce our newest Featured Detective!

While most detectives immediately dismissed the notion of a phantom, few were able to form a sound hypothesis from the very start. Some detectives speculated that Lord Atherington’s trusted employee, Groves, was to blame, while others pointed fingers towards disgruntled gardener Bertie, and the suspicious neighbor, Mr. Groombridge. Some sleuths even suspected that Lord Atherington’s wife might somehow be involved in the mysterious happenings. All the while, most detectives agreed that the source of these noises was likely something remaining within the mansion’s walls, rather than a visiting intruder.

As the case unfolded, it became clearer that this theory was correct, and that our culprit was secretly residing in Wightham Mote. Yet, the depths of Silas Caius Spenser’s plans, and his relationship to the Atherington family, were most swiftly and masterfully illuminated by Detective Brian G. of Eugene, OR, our newest Featured Detective.

Detective Brian presented a clear timeline of relevant events, accounting not only for the present-day mystery at Wightham Mote, but also relevant history, concerning Lord Atherington’s father and our culprit, Mr. Spenser. Besides properly identifying our “night-noise” and shedding light on our villain’s past, Detective Brian was able to quickly point to the intruder’s hideaway and note evidence explaining every odd end, such as the missing bread, the spilled wine, and the innocuous fish knife.

We appreciate everyone’s dedication to sleuthing and look forward to enjoying more spectacular entries this year. Not to mention, a special congratulations from the Dear Holmes Team to Detective Brian G., for an award-worthy solution – a special reward will soon be arriving at your doorstep!
